Samsung launches the Galaxy A3 and A5

Samsung has just rolled out two new smartphones, the Galaxy A3 and the Galaxy A5, a couple of handsets that the company says are the thinnest smartphones it has ever made (more on that in a moment). These handsets have been much rumoured over the last two months and were inspired by the all-metal Galaxy Alpha, a spin-off of sorts to a full range of smartphones.

Samsung slumps to four year smartphone low

Samsung announced its third quarter financial results yesterday and the news is not good for the company, with the gloomy predictions coming true. The Korean giant raked in $3.9 billion in profit through the period, a figure that would delight most companies but represent a huge slide for Samsung, the second quarter in a row where profits have tumbled.

Apple operates in a unique way inside the smartphone market and that has been proven as the company's market share fell in the United States during September, but iPhone sales broke records. Over 39 million iPhone units sold through the last quarter helped Apple to bumper financial results while the company's shares have been trading at all-time highs.

Ever wanted to take advantage of a trial period? These carrier deals let you test a device and network for a limited amount of time before deciding whether to jump on board and buy the handset or join the carrier. Sounds like a pretty good deal doesn't it, but a MobileBurn investigation shows that it is actually a very costly thing to do; so much for a free trial.

Xiaomi chews in Samsung, now the third biggest smartphone seller

Lenovo tied up the acquisition of Motorola today and the Chinese giant said the partnership would be the third biggest smartphone brand in the world and will shift 100 million units in 2015. For the time being though third place as been occupied by another Chinese company, Xiaomi, passing LG for the first time to become the third biggest handset seller in the world.

Motorola is now a Lenovo company

Despite recently becoming more closely linked than ever, Motorola has finally been sold off by Google to Lenovo, months after the deal was first announced. In the deal, Google will retain Motorola's patents, although the company can license them even though it is now under Chinese company Lenovo's wing.

Microsoft Band is the company's first wearable

No big press event, no showbiz style launch, but Microsoft has entered the wearable market today, although don't call its "Microsoft Band" a smartwatch. Interestingly, Redmond has avoided the urge to compete with Android Wear and the Apple Watch with a full wrist accessory and is instead targeting the fitness crowd with the Microsoft Band.
