Goodbye Nokia: Microsoft axes branding

Say goodbye to Nokia smartphones, for now at least. Microsoft has killed off the Nokia branding for future smartphones the company confirmed today, ending months of rumors. Instead of the Nokia Lumia branding, devices will now be known as Microsoft Lumia and will come with the company's Windows logo emblazoned on them in black.

Samsung explains Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge design in detail

Samsung is often criticized for its designs, with many people claiming their devices are cheaply made and overly plastic in feel. The truth is it has been a valid criticism at times, but the Korean giant is taking more steps to solve that, such as the Galaxy Alpha series and the new Galaxy Note 4. There are still issues, such as cutting corners with things like faux leather, but Samsung seems to be on the right track.

Verizon makes the Xperia Z3v and SmartWatch 3 available

Verizon and Sony announced the new Xperia Z3v a couple of weeks back, but far from being a true variant of the Japanese company's new flagship, the Z3v is more a re-tooled Xperia Z2. Putting that disappointment aside, the device is still very good and today Verizon has announced that the smartphone is available.

LG G Watch R to launch early November

LG has today confirmed that its G Watch R wearable will be available in major European and North American markets during the first days of November. Asian and CIS countries will also be getting the smartwatch in that time frame while LG has also confirmed that the device will be available in select markets via the Google Play Store.

Sprint brings international Wi-Fi calling to HTC One M8 and E8

Sprint is rolling out a new update for the HTC One M8 (and the One E8 actually), but it is different to the one other carriers have issued this week. Verizon and T-Mobile have both rolled out a new update bringing HTC?s EYE Experience camera software to their One M8 variants, but Sprint has not prepared the EYE Experience just yet.

It is well documented that Microsoft makes a lot of money from Android, arguably more than it does from its own Windows Phone platform. The company achieves that mostly through patent licensing (around $1 billion per year), but Redmond is also looking to make its presence felt on the rival platform with its services.

Those familiar with Samsung and Verizon will know that the Korean company tends to release developer editions of its smartphones with the US carrier. History is repeating itself as Samsung has leaked the Galaxy Note 4 Developer Edition, which will probably come to Big Red, although if you want one you will have to be willing to spend big.

Apple turns corner in China

Apple has turned a corner in China and in many ways has managed to replicate its global model in the country. The result of that, according to CEO Tim Cook, is that Apple is now "investing like crazy" in China and through his latest visit to Beijing he said just what that meant. Cook confirmed that Cupertino plans to open 25 new retail spaces within Greater China (Hong Kong and Taiwan included) over the next two years.
