Sony brings Android 4.4 to the Xperia M2 range

Sony has today started sending out the latest Android update to two of its budget smartphones, the Xperia M2 and M2 Duo. Both of the handsets will now get Android 4.4 KitKat in all of its glory, but will not be getting any of the latest patches just yet (namely 4.4.1, 4.4.2, 4.4.3, and 4.4.4).

AT&T to carry the HTC One M8 for Windows Phone

When the HTC One M8 launched on Windows Phone yesterday it caused a significant stir for all kinds of reasons. However, like other Windows devices, it was tied to one carrier, in this instance Verizon, with the general thought being that the M8 for WP was exclusive to the biggest carrier in the United States. However, it seems that is not entirely the case as Big Red?s big rival AT&T is also getting in on the act.

Samsung/Nook launch Galaxy Tab 4

We told you earlier in the week how the first product from the Nook/Samsung union would be the Galaxy Tab 4, and now that slate come e-reader has been launched. As you would expect, this is very much a Samsung Galaxy device, from the overall ethos to the nailed on design language, and that all makes me a little sad.

Apple to put 2GB of RAM inside the iPad Air 2

Apple has always done a decent job of defying the ethos that says more RAM and higher numbered specs are better. For example, the iPad Air has just 1GB of RAM, while even basic Android slates pack at least 2GB. However, you would not notice a difference between the performance on the Air or on a high end Android tablet, such is the solid performance of Apple's product.

LG takes out patent for iPhone lookalike

LG has filed a patent for a new phone design, but you may see something strangely familiar about the handset. Of course, patent filings are nothing new, but when they happen to look an awful lot like another smartphone on the market then it is worth looking at.

ZTE announced camera focused Nubia 5s Mini LTE

Chinese manufacturer ZTE has announced a new smartphone today in the form of the Nubia 5s Mini LTE, a handset that will even get a roll out in the United States. The company is pushing this mid-range handset for its strong camera capabilities and is marketing it with a boast that it is the only sub $300 smartphone with a 13 megapixel rear camera and a 5 megapixel front facing snapper.

Samsung's Galaxy Note range is responsible for creating an entire smartphone niche, not bad for a company often accused of failing to be innovative. The phablet (large screen smartphones) trend was started by the Korean company and ever since the Galaxy Note has dominated the market.
